Block Island's geography is what makes the fishing extraordinary. The island sits at the western edge of Block Island Sound, where Long Island Sound meets the Atlantic. That collision of currents creates rips, eddies, and structure that hold bait — and where there's bait, there are predators. The North Rip, Southwest Ledge, and the Mud Hole are legendary for a reason.
Old Harbor on the island's east side gives us a short run to the action. Most of our trips we're fishing within 30 minutes of the dock.
Block Island has been called the striper capital of the world. Trophy fish over 40 pounds are landed here every season. We target them with live eels at dawn and dusk, cast topwater plugs over breaking schools, and work the rips with bucktails. Best months: May through October, peak in June and again in September.
When the blues show up, they show up in numbers. Aggressive, fast, and willing to hit just about anything. Great fish for first-time anglers and kids. Most action: July through early September.
Bottom fishing the structure around Block Island produces excellent table fare. Sea bass stack up on the wrecks and ledges; fluke (summer flounder) work the sandy bottoms. Both are open all summer.
Late summer brings the pelagics inshore. False albacore (“funny fish”) and bonito are sight-cast on light tackle — one of the most addictive fisheries in the Northeast. Window: mid-August through October.
When conditions line up — usually mid-summer — we can run offshore for school-sized bluefin and mahi mahi around the lobster pot lines. These are opportunistic targets on longer trips, weather and bite-dependent.
We fish May through October. Each month has its own personality:
We're light tackle specialists. That means we'll match the gear to what's biting: spinning rods with topwater plugs over breaking fish, live eels drifted along the rips, light bucktails on jigging rods, and bottom rigs for sea bass and fluke. If you fly fish, bring your 8 or 9 weight — September albie blitzes are made for it.
All gear is included. You bring sunglasses, a hat, and snacks if you want them. We provide rods, reels, terminal tackle, bait, ice, fish cleaning at the dock, and USCG safety equipment.
