Captain's Log 2010: Another winter fly fishing the flats of Oahu as well as deep sea fishing the waters of Captain Matt's favorite islands and Hula Charters is back for another season. Bass fishing at its finest. The Hula Girl is docked at Old Harbor. Outfitted with a brand new engine and transmission, we are ready to rock & roll! Read the Captain's fishing report in the Block Island Times. 2009: Hula's Fishing Charters are doing their thing again. Adding a few more boats to the team, Hula will be able to accommodate just about any of your fishing needs. One of those boats is the Lisa Marie run by Captain Art. Art handles Hula's offshore trips including overnight canyon trips, shark fishing and just about everything else you can catch on a rod and reel offshore. Art worked with HC last year and proved he not only can catch fish but also provides a great day on the water. 2008/2009 winter: Captain Matt spent the time in Hawaii and North Carolina doing what he loves - fishing, surfing and spending slow time with his partner Kelly and dog Maize. Customers had a good succes rate in landing keeper sized fish (21 inches) providing a tasty meal for those who chose to take some home. The most exciting thing about fishing Block Island in 2008 was Hula Charters team member Peter Vican landing a new Rhode Island fishing state record. A striped bass weighing 76.2 pounds. The fish was taken at one of Captain Matt's secret honey holes. We can't tell you exactly where but if you fished with Hula Charters you have most likely been there. 2008 was an exciting year all around for Block Island fishermen. Although our neighbors to the north had a less than spectacular season, Block Island saw good numbers of fish from late May through September. Matt's season was busy as usual with a full schedule of returning fishing customers as well some first timers that have sworn to return. Surprisingly, the fluke (summer flounder) bite was better than the previous few years. 2007 is upon us and Captain Matt is ready to go. After spending the winter fishing in Hawaii and Panama Matt asks to let him work for you and help you to find a great day on the water The 2005 season proved a challenging one to say the least. The fish showed up later than usual and proven tactics came up short of the prize. Through hard work and a honed fish sense Captain Matt adapted to the conditions and once again managed to get a Striped Bass on almost every trip. His customers have placed in both of the Islands fishing tournaments three consecutive years. Matt has been busy all winter making lures and tying flies to make your trip on the water a successful one. We know that one trip with Captain Matt aboard the Hula Girl and you'll be hooked. In both 2003 and 2004 His clients enjoyed an incredible 98% success rate fishing for striped bass on Block Island. Captain Matt’s clients are easy to pick out when they tie up at the dock. They are the ones with the big fish, and the even bigger smiles. That kind of fishing expertise is what was responsible for Matt being named the grand slam winner in the 2004 Block Island Fishing Tournament. That accomplishment not only gave Captain Matt bragging rights for the whole year, but also served to motivate him to work hard to maintain his distinguished history of success. Prior to fishing Block Island, Rhode Island, Captain Matt King, grew up fishing in the waters of Southern RI. As a kid, he fished with some of the great surfcasters of our rocky coastline. Years later, he moved to Hawaii to pursue a career as a respected chef in some of the best island restaurants. When he wasn’t in the kitchen, Matt was either surfing, fishing, or sailing. In the summer of 2000, and again in 2001, Matt returned to chef Block Islands popular Eli's restaurant. In between Block Island gigs, Captain Matt cruised the Hawaiian Islands in his 27' sailboat. He knew though that he needed to return to beautiful Block Island. In July of 2002, Captain Matt, along with 2 shipmates sailed from Honolulu, Hawaii to Marina Del Ray, California. It was then that Matt decided to pursue his lifelong dream of owning and captaining his own RI charter fishing boat.
Captain Matt is fully licensed and insured, certified in CPR and a member of the Rhode Island Angler's Association. Matt is a Coast Guard certified Captain, and member of the South Kingstown, Block Island Chamber of Commerce and writes a column called "The Fishing Report" for the Block Island Times . The most important thing for Hula Charters is that customers have a great time. We know that is the best way to keep you coming back and maybe even tell a dozen of your friends. Tight lines and Good Times. Hope we see you soon.
